Canada imposed its trademark transition game from the opening tip. Led by NBA duo Nickeil Alexander-Walker and Luguentz Dort, Canada built a double-digit lead in the first half and maintained control throughout. The Canadians shot efficiently from the floor, capitalising on their significant size advantage inside with Kelly Olynyk and Khem Birch controlling the paint.

Panama, who entered the window averaging 75.8 points per game in qualifying, struggled to generate consistent offence against Canada's length. The hosts managed just 66 points — more than 10 below Canada's tournament-average defensive output.

Canada's transition offence in the first half effectively decided the contest. Panama had entered the game averaging just 6.2 fastbreak points per game — the lowest mark of any team in the Americas Qualifiers — while Canada led the region with 20.7. The disparity materialised in a decisive second quarter, where Canada's ability to convert defensive stops into quick scores stretched the lead beyond Panama's reach before halftime. Panama never pulled closer than 14 points in the second half.

Nickeil Alexander-Walker — The Toronto-born guard orchestrated Canada's offence with composure, contributing across the board as the team's primary playmaker. His ability to push the pace in transition set the tone from the opening quarter.

Kelly Olynyk — The veteran big man provided a reliable interior presence, scoring efficiently and controlling the glass. His experience in international competition proved valuable in a road environment.

Luguentz Dort — Montreal's defensive stopper set the physical tone on the perimeter, disrupting Panama's backcourt and generating transition opportunities with his pressure defence.

For Panama, several players showed fight in the second half but the early deficit proved insurmountable against a deeper Canadian roster.

Canada's tournament scoring average sits at 104 points per game — the highest in the Americas Qualifiers — and while the 86-point total against Panama falls below that mark, the game was effectively managed from start to finish without needing maximum output. The 20-point margin of victory reflects the gulf in FIBA world ranking (No. 5 vs No. 56) and the disparity in roster depth.

Panama's 66 points are within their tournament average of 75.8 when accounting for the quality of opposition, but the inability to generate easy transition baskets (6.2 per game, last in the region) proved fatal against Canada's fastbreak-oriented attack.

Canada remain undefeated at 7-0 atop Group F in the Second Round and will return home to face Argentina on Monday, August 31, at the Centre Vidéotron in Quebec City — a clash of the group's two heavyweights. Argentina (5-1 entering the window) opened Window 4 with an 89-75 win over Puerto Rico.

Panama drop to 2-5 and face an uphill battle to claim one of the top three spots in Group F that would secure World Cup qualification. With games against Argentina, Uruguay and Puerto Rico still to come, the road to Qatar 2027 becomes steeper with every loss.

The top three teams from each Second Round group, plus the best fourth-placed side, will advance to the 32-team FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 in Qatar (27 August – 12 September 2027).

Canada did exactly what a top-five team should do on the road against a significantly lower-ranked opponent: control the game from the opening tip, impose their identity in transition, and never allow hope to take root. The stiffer test comes Monday against Argentina in Quebec City. Panama, by contrast, must find answers quickly or face elimination from contention long before the final window.
