The second-quarter explosion. After managing only seven points in the first 10 minutes — a season-low output for any quarter in this qualifying campaign — Gilas needed a spark. They got it from the entire rotation. Coach Tim Cone's decision to push the tempo caught Iran off balance, turning a 36-34 halftime lead into a lead they never relinquished. The 29-point second quarter was the Philippines' highest-scoring quarter of Window 4.

Dwight Ramos — The de facto leader with Justin Brownlee sidelined by injury, Ramos controlled the game's tempo throughout and was the engine of the second-quarter turnaround. His leadership on both ends earned him player-of-the-game honours.

Kai Sotto — Fresh off an 18-point, 14-rebound performance against Jordan on Friday, Sotto anchored the interior defence that held Iran to nine points in the fourth quarter. His presence deterred drives and altered shots at the rim.

Kevin Quiambao — One of only two Philippines players to score in the first quarter, Quiambao provided crucial early offence when nobody else could find the basket.

Justin Arana — Called into the lineup after Carl Tamayo was ruled out with a sprained ankle suffered against Jordan, Arana made his Gilas debut and provided quality minutes off the bench.

The quarter-by-quarter split tells the story of two completely different games. Iran's 18-7 first quarter suggested a blowout — they controlled the paint and forced perimeter misses. But the Philippines' 29-16 second quarter response (a plus-13 swing) flipped momentum permanently. The 19-9 fourth quarter demonstrated the defensive ceiling of this Gilas side: holding a team to single-digit points in a quarter is rare at any level of FIBA competition.

Iran entered having lost only one of six second-round games before tip-off (a 93-91 OT defeat to New Zealand on Friday). The Philippines had won just two of six. The final result was not an upset of record proportions, but it was a statement about the gap closing between these Asian programmes.

Philippines improved to 3-4 in Group E of the Second Round, keeping their World Cup qualification hopes firmly alive. Only the top three teams from each second-round group advance to the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup, alongside hosts Qatar. Gilas are now in a four-team logjam for positions 2-5 behind runaway leaders Australia (8-0).

Iran dropped to 5-2 but remain well positioned in the top half of Group E. Team Melli head directly from Manila to Japan for the 2026 Asian Games in Nagoya (10-20 September).

This was the most complete 40-minute performance by the Philippines in this qualifying window. After a nightmare start, they showed composure, defensive discipline and depth — three qualities that have been inconsistent in previous campaigns. For Iran, the inability to score in the fourth quarter against a fired-up home crowd will be a concern as they transition to Asian Games duty.
