Essen vs Nordhorn-Lingen

The opening exchanges were tight, with both sides trading goals through the first 15 minutes. Essen drew first blood and kept the game level until the midway point of the first half.

A two-minute suspension for Tom Wolf (Essen, 57') proved costly — Nordhorn capitalised through Tobeler and Ruddat to restore a three-goal cushion. Tarek Marschall sealed the result with his goal at 60', making it 29-32.

Essen's best spell came between the 50th and 55th minutes, when they cut the deficit from five goals to one. But the two-minute suspension for Tom Wolf at 57' broke their rhythm. Nordhorn scored twice during the power play and held Essen at arm's length through the closing stages.

Maximilian Lux (Nordhorn-Lingen) — The veteran playmaker was involved in nearly every critical attack, converting penalties and open-play chances alike. His seven-metre strikes at 17', 21' and on the halftime whistle kept Nordhorn comfortably ahead.

Tarek Marschall (Nordhorn-Lingen) — Scored key goals at 19', 24', 27', 45', 46', 54', 57' and the final nail at 60'. His movement between the back line caused Essen persistent problems.

Felix Eißing (Essen) — Essen's most reliable attacking outlet, scoring at 31', 34', 40', 45', 50' to lead his side's recovery attempts. Also missed a penalty at 40' that could have changed the complexion of the second half.

Felix Göttler (Essen) — Contributed goals at 28', 37', 45', 53' and worked hard in both directions, but his efforts weren't enough to drag Essen over the line.

The ran live ticker showed a game of fine margins in the first 45 minutes before Nordhorn's quality told. The 15-18 halftime scoreline reflected a balanced opening half where neither side dominated — Nordhorn were simply more clinical from the penalty spot. In the second half, the visitors' 14-11 edge was built on superior conversion of their limited chances after Essen had fought back to 30-29. The decisive factor was discipline: Essen's two suspensions (Tom Wolf at 36' and 57', Finley Werschkull at 33', Nicholas Schley at 54') gave Nordhorn the numerical advantage at critical junctures. Nordhorn also weathered four missed Essen penalties (Felix Mart at 37' and 38', Nils Homscheid at 30', Felix Eißing at 40').

The result gives Nordhorn-Lingen a winning start to the 2026/27 campaign despite arriving in Essen under a cloud — the club was hit with a six-point deduction earlier in the summer due to licensing irregularities, as reported by NDR. Essen, coming off a spirited DHB-Pokal win over SC DHfK Leipzig (36-33 after extra time) on 22 August, couldn't carry that momentum into the league.

Nordhorn-Lingen did exactly what a side with top-half ambitions should do on the opening day: absorb pressure, stay clinical in transition, and win on the road. Essen showed spirit in their fightback but the penalty misses and discipline lapses proved decisive. If Kenji Hövels's side can tighten up defensively and convert their chances, there's enough there to suggest a comfortable mid-table finish — but they'll need to learn fast from a defeat that was closer than the final three-goal margin suggests.
