Both teams played at high tempo from the opening whistle. Germany, after an opening defeat to Spain (28-31) and a commanding 28-21 victory over France, carried growing confidence.

The first half was a back-and-forth contest with neither side able to pull clear. Switzerland found solutions against the German defence through their playmaker Tiago Cuencas, while Germany relied on fast breaks and consistent finishing from the back court, led by William Reichardt. The scores were level on multiple occasions before Germany edged ahead to take a 17-16 lead into the break.

The second half saw Germany establish better defensive organisation and build a three-goal advantage around the 45-minute mark, capitalising on quick transitions. Switzerland clawed back repeatedly, driven by their home crowd and the creativity of Cuencas, but Germany managed the closing stages with composure. The hosts got within a single goal on several occasions but could not draw level. Germany held on for a 35-33 win.

Germany’s decisive spell came between the 45th and 50th minutes. A more compact defensive shape forced Swiss turnovers, which the DHB team converted into fast-break goals. The three-goal cushion proved enough: Switzerland reduced the deficit to one but never had the ball with a chance to equalise in the final minute.

William Reichardt was Germany’s most reliable attacking threat, finishing with high efficiency from the back court after also impressing against France. Julius Hein caused constant problems at the line, scoring crucial close-range goals that Switzerland’s defence struggled to contain.

For Switzerland, Tiago Cuencas was again the creative heartbeat. The playmaker, who scored 12 goals against Spain the previous day, pulled the strings in attack and kept Switzerland in the game. Goalkeeper Lino Schneider made several important saves to keep the hosts within touching distance.

The 68 total goals (35-33) were the highest of the tournament — surpassing Germany-Spain (59) and Switzerland-Spain (65). The narrow one-goal half-time margin (17-16) reflected the evenness of the contest. Germany’s ability to create a three-goal buffer in the second half and manage the game from there proved decisive, rather than any sustained dominance in possession or shot count.

Germany finish second in the Airport Trophy with two wins from three (28-21 vs France, 35-33 vs Switzerland) and one defeat (28-31 vs Spain). Spain won the tournament with a perfect 3-0 record after beating France 31-30 earlier on Sunday. Switzerland ended bottom with three narrow defeats but showed clear improvement across the weekend — from 21-31 against France to 32-33 against Spain and 33-35 against Germany.

Both teams now turn their attention to the U20 European Championship in Romania, which begins on 8 July 2026. The Airport Trophy served as the final competitive test before the continental tournament.
