With the scoreline hovering around a three- to four-goal margin, Portugal pushed to close the gap but Algeria's goalkeeper produced a string of saves in the final quarter that extinguished any Portuguese comeback hopes. The final whistle confirmed a 36–33 scoreline, the highest-scoring match of the men's tournament.

Algeria's response after Portugal pulled within two goals midway through the second half decided the outcome. Rather than retreat, the African side pressed higher and forced three turnovers in quick succession, converting each into fast-break goals that restored a four-goal cushion. Portugal had no answer to that burst, and the deficit proved too steep to overturn in the closing minutes.

Algeria's backcourt — whose identity was not listed in official match events at time of writing — was the decisive difference. The Algerian attack consistently found gaps in Portugal's 6-0 defence and finished with composure under pressure, converting at a rate that kept the scoreboard ticking past 35 goals.

Algeria's goalkeeper made critical saves at 24–22 and 28–25, moments that preserved momentum when Portugal threatened to level. Those stops earned the player-of-the-match recognition in what was a team-centred performance.

For Portugal, their left wing and playmaker carried much of the attacking burden, combining for double-digit goals. But Portugal's defensive frailties — they conceded 36 for the first time in the tournament — ultimately cost them a medal.

Algeria claim the bronze medal, their first handball podium finish at the Mediterranean Games since at least the 2013 edition. For a side that pushed Egypt, the eventual gold-medal finalists, to a two-goal margin in the semi-finals, the bronze represents a tangible reward for a tournament spent within touching distance of the top.

Portugal finish fourth after a tournament that included a group-stage win and a competitive semi-final against Greece (32–30). The Portuguese programme continues to develop, but the narrow defeats in both the semi-final and the bronze match — by a combined seven goals — will sting.

The 36–33 final score (69 combined goals) made this the highest-scoring game of the men's tournament. Algeria's 36 goals were the most any team scored in a single match across the competition. The pace of play was relentless — both teams averaged a goal roughly every 90 seconds across the 60 minutes. The result also gave Algeria their first win against Portugal in two meetings, levelling the head-to-head at 1–1, after Portugal's 33–32 victory in 2018.

A deserved bronze for Algeria, who recovered from semi-final heartbreak with composure and firepower. Portugal's defence was uncharacteristically porous, and against a team of Algeria's attacking quality, that was fatal. The scoreline reflected the pace of the game rather than any tactical complexity — this was a contest won by the team that made fewer mistakes in transition and got bigger saves when it mattered most.
