Avangard Omsk vs Cherepovets

A scoreless first period gave little indication of the drama to come. Avangard drew first blood at 08:46 of the second period when Andrew Poturalski hammered home a powerplay rebound from a Josh Leivo shot, with Max Lajoie drawing the secondary assist on the man advantage.

Semyon Chistyakov doubled the lead — also on the powerplay — converting from close range off Konstantin Okulov and Poturalski to make it 2–0. The two quick PPGs inside five minutes suggested the hosts had found their rhythm.

Severstal's ability to neutralise Avangard's powerplay momentum after the first intermission proved decisive. After conceding two PPGs early in the second, Andrei Kozyrev's side tightened their penalty kill entirely — Avangard did not score again with the man advantage — and gradually took over five-on-five play. The final 20 minutes saw Cherepovets outshoot and outwork the hosts, who generated little after Dumbadze's equaliser.

The final 3–2 scoreline flips the script from the second-period flow, when Avangard controlled the game with two powerplay markers. Severstal's discipline improved markedly after the first two penalties, and their five-on-five edge in the third period tells the real story. The hosts managed only one shot in the final eight minutes after falling behind. Avangard went 2/4 on the powerplay and Severstal 0/2, but the visitors' even-strength dominance in the final frame — outshooting Avangard 13–7 — proved decisive.

Avangard have lost both opening games of their home tournament — 2–5 to Sibir on Wednesday and now this collapse against the defending Blinov Cup champions. With Lokomotiv, Neftekhimik and Sibir still to play in the round-robin format, Guy Boucher's side face mounting pressure to collect points. Severstal, who opened with a win over Neftekhimik (reported ahead of this match), have started their title defence with back-to-back victories.
