Albi started with far more intent than in J1 and were rewarded inside the opening half-hour. A far more clinical outfit than the one that struggled at Carcassonne, the Tarn side crossed for two tries to build a 12-0 lead before the 30-minute mark. Mont-de-Marsan, playing their first away fixture after a 47-0 demolition of Vienne in J1, struggled to find rhythm.

The visitors' response came through the boot. Albi's discipline wavered under mounting pressure and Mont-de-Marsan slotted two penalties — 12-6 at half-time.

Mont-de-Marsan emerged sharper after the break and restored parity around the hour mark, 12-12. With the Stade Montois pack beginning to dominate territory, momentum had shifted decisively.

The turning point arrived in the 77th minute. Mont-de-Marsan scored a collective try to take the lead for the first time: 15-17.

But Albi refused to fold. Deep into stoppage time, the hosts earned a penalty in kickable range and converted to level at 17-17. Then, with the clock already past 80 minutes, Albi won a second penalty — and held their nerve to slot it, completing a stunning 21-17 turnaround.

Mont-de-Marsan's 77th-minute try appeared to have won it. Having trailed all night, the visitors' multi-phase collective score was their first lead. Rugbyrama noted Albi were "more realistic" than in J1 — their two first-half tries converted possession into points, something they failed to do at Carcassonne. Mont-de-Marsan's 12-point reply largely came from the tee, underlining their difficulty breaking Albi's defensive line until the 77th minute.

Albi climb the table with their first win of the season, having broken a nine-match losing streak against Mont-de-Marsan stretching back to 2013. The Stade Montois — top of the table after J1 — miss the chance to go 2-0 and will rue a game that was in their grasp with three minutes to play. Both sides now prepare for Round 3 on the weekend of 4-6 September: Albi travel away while Mont-de-Marsan host Bourg-en-Bresse at Stade Boniface on Friday 4 September.

This was a game of two comebacks, but only one side finished stronger. Mont-de-Marsan's second-half revival suggested a team readjusting after Pro D2 relegation, but Albi's refusal to accept a defeat that looked inevitable for 77 minutes speaks to genuine resilience. The Nationale season has its first statement result: the pecking order is not as settled as the head-to-head history suggested.
