Shillcock extended Brive's lead to 20–6 with a penalty in the 44th minute, but the match turned when Valence Romans scored a try seven minutes later. Suddenly at 20–13 and with a man disadvantage, Brive were scrambling. Meret landed another penalty in the 58th minute (20–16) and the visitors were rampant. Shillcock steadied Brive nerves with a penalty in the 67th minute (23–16), but Valence kept coming.

In the 78th minute, Valence kicked a penalty to five metres. Replacement Adrien Roux caught the lineout and the visitors set a driving maul. Hooker Dorian Marco-Pena — who had replaced Tauleigne earlier — emerged with the ball grounded. Meret's conversion attempt from the right touchline drifted agonisingly wide, and Brive held on through a final defensive stand to secure the win.

James Shillcock (Brive) — The Brive fly-half was the game's key individual, scoring 13 points (2 conversions, 3 penalties) and providing the assist for Luc's try. His game management in the final quarter, particularly after Venter's yellow card, kept his side ahead. Player of the match.

Francisco Coria Marchetti (Brive) — The prop opened the scoring with a powerful finish from close range and anchored a scrum that held up well under pressure.

Lucas Meret (Valence Romans) — Landed three penalties and a conversion for 11 points, but will rue two missed kicks — a long-range penalty attempt in the 76th minute and the decisive conversion from the touchline — that ultimately cost his side a draw.

Dorian Marco-Pena (Valence Romans) — Introduced from the bench in the first half, the hooker scored the crucial 78th-minute try that set up a grandstand finish.

The scoreboard flattered Brive's first-half dominance: two well-worked tries against one genuine Valence attacking threat in the opening 40 minutes. Valence Romans' second-half response was reflected in territory and pressure, with the visitors winning four kickable penalties and producing two tries from driving lineout play — a major weakness in Brive's defence. Brive's discipline cost them: Venter's yellow card and repeated offside infringements invited Valence back into a contest that looked settled at 20–6. Shillcock's 100% kicking record (3/3 penalties, 2/2 conversions) vs Meret's 4/6 from the tee was effectively the difference on the night.

Brive open the Patat era with four points and sit seventh after Round 1. Valence Romans collect a losing bonus point and sit level with Nevers on one point. The result is a positive start for a Brive side that underperformed last season, but the defensive lapses in the second half will be a concern.

Brive travel to Agen on Friday 4 September (21:00 CEST). Valence Romans host Soyaux-Angoulême on the same evening, kicking off at 19:30 CEST — an immediate chance to convert that bonus point into a win.

A game of two distinct halves. Brive were clinical early, sloppy late. Valence Romans were the stronger side after the break and will feel they could — perhaps should — have taken something more than a losing bonus point. Meret's missed conversion will haunt, but the visitors' revival bodes well for the season ahead. Patat's Brive have a foundation to build on, but the resilience they showed in the final minute matters as much as the early spark.
