Toulon started at pace and dominated the opening seven minutes. They ran in three unanswered tries before half-time, converting two of them to lead 17-0 at the break against a Perpignan side that could not establish any attacking rhythm in the first half.

Perpignan emerged sharper after the interval. They finally crossed the whitewash with a converted try midway through the second half, cutting the deficit to 17-7. But Toulon’s defensive organisation held firm in the closing stages, and the Catalans could not find a second score.

The match was the second fixture of the opening day at the Biarritz stage, played under the competition’s new two-day format where day one determines which teams advance to the knockout phase on day two.

Toulon’s first-half blitz decided the contest. By scoring three tries in the opening spell, they forced Perpignan into chase mode from the restart. Perpignan’s second-half response — their only score of the match — came too late to alter the outcome, and Toulon’s defensive structure absorbed the late pressure without conceding again.

Apete Narogo and Joé Quere-Karaba, two of the key names in Toulon’s travelling squad, appeared central to the attacking thrust that sliced through Perpignan’s defence in the first half. The duo were instrumental in the try-scoring burst that put the match beyond reach.

For Perpignan, the second-half try-scorer provided a moment of quality that hinted at what a faster start might have produced, but the team collectively could not reproduce Toulon’s finishing efficiency.

The 17-0 half-time scoreline captures the story: Toulon’s execution in the first period was near-flawless, while Perpignan failed to register any points. The second half flipped 7-0 in Perpignan’s favour, suggesting tactical adjustments at the break worked, but the damage was already done. A single converted try (7 points) against three scores from Toulon (three tries with two conversions for 17) reflects the gap in attacking efficiency.

This was the opening fixture of the 2026 In Extenso Supersevens season for both teams. The competition features 16 men’s sides divided into four pools of four, with the top two from each pool advancing to the quarter-finals on day two. The Biarritz stage (21–22 August) is the first of two regular-season weekends before the grand final at Paris La Défense Arena on 6–7 February 2027.

Toulon sit top of Group B after the win with a healthy points differential. Their next pool match is against Monaco Sevens later on Friday. Perpignan, who entered the match having won two of their last five, must win their remaining group fixtures to keep qualification hopes alive.

Toulon delivered the kind of performance contenders need in Supersevens: a fast start, ruthless finishing and the composure to close out when the opposition fights back. Perpignan showed character after the break but the first-half deficit was insurmountable. The group-stage format punishes slow starts, and Perpignan will need to address that before their next outing.
