Heriots vs Hawick

Heriots opened the scoring after four minutes when Euan McLaren picked up from close range and plunged over, with Calum Jessop converting. Hawick responded with two Bailey Donaldson penalties (7-6), briefly suggesting a contest.

But Heriots pulled clear before half-time. Tom Glendinning darted in from a slick handling move, Ross McKnight motored over from 30 metres after a fortunate bounce from Hugo Alderson's kick, and Mykel Sleemen marked his debut with a bonus-point try. Jessop converted all four, making it 28-6 at the break.

The second half followed the same script. Glendinning finished acrobatically in the corner for his second, and Ross Brown added another after a Glendinning interception. By the time Hawick scored their sole try through captain Fraser Renwick (converted by Donaldson), the gap was 35-13 and insurmountable.

Heriot's kept the foot down. McKnight added a second, Jessop scored and converted his own try, and late tries from Tom Dunn, Aidan Boyle, Ned Hufton and Angus Hunter rounded off the scoring. Jessop finished with 10 conversions from 12 attempts.

Hawick trailed just 14-6 midway through the first half when they shipped the bonus-point try. Sleemen's debut score, followed immediately by Glendinning's second — two tries in a five-minute window either side of the 30-minute mark — turned a competitive deficit into a 22-point gap that Hawick never threatened to close.

Tom Glendinning (Heriots) took the official player-of-the-match award for his aggressive carrying and two tries, one of which required acrobatic finishing in the corner. Calum Jessop contributed 20 points from the tee and a try. Ross McKnight showed blistering pace for both his scores, including a 30-metre burst that left the Hawick defence flat-footed.

For Hawick, Fraser Renwick was a persistent threat in the loose and scored his side's only try. Bailey Donaldson kept the scoreboard ticking with his two penalties and conversion, but the visitors lacked the firepower to stay with Heriots' backline.

Twelve tries to one tells the story of total territorial and attacking dominance. Jessop's 10/12 conversion rate (83%) adds a reliable 20 points to Heriots' attacking output. Hawick's two first-half penalties show they could win field position early, but their inability to convert pressure into tries until the 55th minute exposed a gulf in finishing quality. Heriots' willingness to keep scoring deep into the second half — four tries in the final 15 minutes — reflects the squad depth Edwards has built through a competitive pre-season.

Heriots sit top of the early Premiership table with a maximum five-point haul and a points-difference advantage that could prove significant. The result is a statement of intent from new head coach Stuart Edwards, who said: "I didn't expect us to win 80-13. I also feel we left a lot out there."

Hawick coach Graham Hogg called it "a massive reality check," adding: "Heriot's are a quality side and they took their chances really well, but individually and collectively we need to be a lot better."

Heriots travel to face Currie Chieftains next Saturday (5 September, 3pm). Hawick host Kelso at Mansfield Park on the same date (5 September, 3pm).

Heriots delivered an opening-day performance that every other Premiership club will note. The balance between forward power and backline speed, sustained across 80 minutes, points to a side built for a title push. For Hawick, this was a brutal introduction — but the Borderers have the experience to regroup before Round 2.
