The opening set was the tightest of the match. Iran, appearing in an Asian Championship semifinal for the first time, stayed within 23-21 before outside hitter Wu Mengjie scored two critical points to close out the set 25-22.

China dominated the second set, pulling away to a 19-10 lead behind a relentless net presence and extending to 22-12 before sealing it 25-12.

A 6-0 start in the third set suggested another rout, but Iran responded with a 20-18 fightback that briefly threatened a fourth set. China held firm, however, and finished the match 25-19.

The first set proved decisive. Iran had lost 3-0 to China in the group stage (25-14, 25-23, 25-14 on 24 August) but stayed competitive this time until 23-21. Wu Mengjie's back-to-back points killed Iran's momentum and China never trailed thereafter. Winning the tight first frame effectively ended Iran's path to an upset.

China's dominance at the net is reflected in their 13-2 block advantage. They also out-killed Iran 52-40, a 12-kill margin that understates the control they exerted since most of Iran's kills came in the first and third sets when the outcome was no longer in doubt. The 25-12 second-set scoreline — the most lopsided of the match — underscores how completely China control a set once their block-and-transition game clicks.

China advances to Sunday's final against Thailand, aiming for a record-extending 14th Asian Championship gold and their first since 2015. Both finalists have secured a spot at the 2027 FIVB Volleyball World Cup. The winner on Sunday also qualifies for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

"Iran made history by making it to the semifinals, so today they played without pressure and hesitation," Zhuang said after the match. "They put the pressure on our side and that made the match more difficult for us."

Iran will face Japan in the bronze medal match on Sunday at 15:15 local time (07:15 UTC). The winner of that match also earns a World Cup 2027 berth.

Thailand beat Japan 3-1 (25-21, 25-20, 20-25, 25-20) in the other semifinal, snapping a long losing streak against the world No. 6 side.

China have not been tested in five matches — they have yet to drop a set all tournament — but the final against a Thailand side that just beat Japan for the first time in years presents a genuine step up. Sunday will be the third Asian Championship final meeting between the two sides, with Thailand winning the previous two in 2009 and 2023. Iran, meanwhile, will be disappointed the first set slipped away, but reaching their first Asian Championship semifinal and still having a World Cup berth to play for marks historic progress for Iranian women's volleyball.
