The third set at 23-23 was the match's only genuine pressure moment. Bulgaria had battled back from deficits throughout the set, with Milanova (12 points) and Iva Dudova (6) keeping them in touch. But Antropova's two consecutive aces on serve — part of a 6/14 serving clinic — turned a potential fourth set into a straight-sets finish. Paola Egonu (Italy): 14 points (11/24 spiking, 2 aces). Egonu's presence on the right pinned Bulgaria's block wide and created space for Antropova on the opposite side.

Sarah Fahr (Italy): 8 points (4 kills, 2 blocks, 2 aces). Efficient in the middle and a stabilising presence in transition.

Aleksandra Milanova (Bulgaria): The only Bulgarian in double figures with 12 points (12/25 spiking). Carried the scoring load but lacked support — no other Bulgarian reached 7 points.

The 3-0 scoreline looks routine, and in many ways it was. Italy's attacking depth — Antropova and Egonu combining for 32 of Italy's offensive points — overwhelmed a Bulgarian defence that had conceded straight-set losses to Serbia and Czechia in the group stage. The service line told the story: Italy's 9 aces to Bulgaria's 0 created a 9-point advantage from serve alone, more than the margin of any individual set. Italy's 15-point advantage in spike efficiency (Antropova at 47.6%, Milanova at 48% but on far fewer attempts with less support) masked a closer contest in set three, where Bulgaria's block-and-defence system briefly found its rhythm.

Italy advance to the quarterfinals on 2 September in Brno, where they will face the winner of Czechia vs Sweden — the host nation or the Swedish team led by Isabelle Haak. Italy have won all six matches at EuroVolley 2026 and dropped only one set in the entire tournament (against France in the group stage).

For Bulgaria, the tournament ends at the Round of 16. Marcello Abbondanza's young squad secured two group-stage wins (over Ukraine and Austria) but were outclassed by the tournament's elite. The programme's trajectory remains upward with one of the youngest rosters in the competition, but the gap to teams like Italy remains significant.

Italy did exactly what tournament favourites should do in the Round of 16: control the match from start to finish, face one brief period of pressure and extinguish it immediately. Antropova's serving performance was the difference between a comfortable sweep and a potentially complicated fourth set. Italy's quarterfinal — against Czechia or Sweden — will be a sterner test, but their depth and serving pressure make them the team to beat in their half of the draw.
