Greece struck first with a 25-22 win in the opening set, racing to an early lead behind sharp serving and compact defence that troubled the Turkish reception. It was the first set Turkey had lost all tournament.

The response was emphatic. Turkey regrouped after the set break and dominated the second set 25-17, tightening their block and forcing Greece into errors. The third set was a rout: Greece managed only 12 points as Turkey’s attacking efficiency peaked at its highest level of the match. The fourth followed the same script — 25-16 — as Turkey closed out the victory in straight sets after the first.

The reset between Sets 1 and 2. After losing the opening set — their first dropped set of the tournament — Turkey adjusted their defensive shape, pressing higher at the net and cutting off Greece’s primary attacking angles. Greece scored 17, 12 and 16 points in the next three sets combined, fewer than in the first set alone. The shift was structural, not individual.

Turkey’s front line dominated the middle of the net. Their blocking unit neutralised Greece’s key hitters, and the outside attackers found clean kills through the Greek block once the serve-and-pass rhythm stabilised. With no official match statistics published at time of writing, the aggregate numbers tell the story: Turkey conceded 25 points in Set 1 and only 45 across the next three.

Greece’s early rhythm — sharp serves and well-placed tips — was the reason they took the opener, but they had no response once Turkey’s block adjusted.

The 22-25, 25-17, 25-12, 25-16 set progression shows a match that flipped completely after one set. Turkey’s 75 total points to Greece’s 70 across four sets understates the dominance of the final three frames. Turkey won three sets by an average margin of nine points; Greece’s margin in the one set they won was three. The 25-12 third set was the most lopsided of Turkey’s entire group campaign.

Turkey finish Group B top with a 4-0 record, having dropped only one set across all four matches. They advance to the Mediterranean Games semi-finals as group winners. Greece finish second in Group B with a 3-1 record — their only loss coming to Turkey — and also progress to the knockout stage.

Turkey’s semi-final opponent will be determined by the crossover with Group A. Greece face the second-placed team from Group A. The tournament continues in Taranto ahead of the gold-medal match scheduled later in the week.

This was a match of two distinctly different phases. Greece’s first-set performance showed they belong at this level, but Turkey’s response revealed the gap in depth and tactical discipline. If Turkey maintain the level they showed in Sets 2-4, they are the team to beat for gold.
