Set 1 — USA 26:28 France

France started sharply, racing to a 5:1 lead behind strong attacking from Mathis Henno and Trévor Clévenot. Set 3 — USA 23:25 France

France led 7:11 after a punishing serving run from Mathis Henno. USA showed fight, clawing back to 15:15 and then moving ahead 19:17 after Jordan Ewert converted a transition opportunity. But France responded with poise, regaining the lead in a tight finish. Henno closed the match with a kill from position six, clinching a 25:23 victory and a 3-0 sweep.

The defining moment came in the opening set. USA led 17:13 and held set-point chances at 24:22, only for France to dig deep, save multiple set points, and steal it 28:26. Had USA taken the early lead, the match may have unfolded differently. Instead, the Americans spent the rest of the match chasing, and France played from ahead for the remainder of the contest.

Théo Faure (France) — The opposite was decisive in the clutch, landing the winning attack in the first set and consistently delivering in high-pressure moments. His power from the right side troubled the American block throughout.

Mathis Henno (France) — A standout on both offence and serve. His serving run in the third set (taking France from 7:9 to 7:11) was a match-turning sequence, and he finished the contest with the match-winning kill.

Antoine Brizard (France) — The setter orchestrated France's offence with precision and added a timely ace in the second set (16:20). His decision-making in transition kept USA's block guessing.

Jake Hanes (USA) — The most consistent American attacker, Hanes powered several crucial points and was a threat from the service line in the first set. USA's troubles were collective rather than individual, with errors proving costly.

Player of the Match: Théo Faure (France)

The set scores — 28:26, 25:21, 25:23 — tell the story of three close sets decided by an average of just 2.7 points. The decisive margin was France's composure in tight moments, particularly in the first set where USA held set-point leads and failed to convert. The Americans' error count was consistently elevated, most visibly in service faults that short-circuited their rallies at critical times. France, by contrast, played cleaner volleyball in the big moments — a hallmark of their Olympic pedigree.

USA's blocking improved as the match went on (they levelled set 2 at 12:12 with a block and led 19:17 in set 3), but they could not sustain defensive pressure between the 20-point mark and the finish. France's ability to win the back-end of each set was the statistical through-line of the match.

The XXIII Hubert Wagner Memorial serves as the final preparatory tournament before the European Championships (starting early September) and the NORCECA continental championships. For France, this straight-sets win over a top-five FIVB-ranked side is an ideal start to their Krakow campaign and a confidence builder ahead of the continental title defence.

The Americans will have a quick chance to bounce back: they face hosts Poland on Saturday 29 August at 15:00 local time in their second pool match, while France take on Slovenia on the same day.

France were the sharper, more disciplined side in the moments that mattered. Three close sets flatter USA slightly — Les Bleus never trailed by more than two points in any decisive phase and showed the composure of a team that knows how to close. USA have the talent to trouble anyone, but need to clean up unforced errors before their next assignment against Poland.
