Quezon City vs Abra Weavers

Abra seized control from the opening tip. DJ Fenner and Jake Figueroa combined for early baskets as the Weavers built a double-digit lead inside the first quarter. Quezon City had no answer for Abra's length on defence, forcing contested shots that led to transition opportunities at the other end.

By halftime, the Weavers held a comfortable cushion. Ildefonso, showing no signs of rust after his international duties, scored efficiently from mid-range and beyond the arc. Raven Gonzales anchored the defensive end with his shot-blocking presence, altering Quezon City's interior looks throughout.

The second half brought no respite for Quezon City. Abra's pressure defence forced turnovers that turned into easy scores, and the lead swelled past 20 points in the third quarter. The Black Bulls had no sustained run to cut the margin, their offence stalling against Abra's disciplined rotations.

The game effectively ended inside the opening six minutes. Abra opened on a 14–3 run that forced Quezon City to play from behind for the entire afternoon. The Weavers held Quezon City to single-digit scoring in the first quarter, and the deficit never dipped below 15 points after the midway point of the second period. Against a team with Abra's experience and depth, a hole that deep this early was insurmountable.

Dave Ildefonso (Abra) — 18 points. The reigning MPBL MVP showed why he was named Best Player of the Conference at the Jones Cup, scoring efficiently in his return and providing leadership on both ends. Named player of the match.

DJ Fenner (Abra) — 14 points, 7 rebounds. Fenner's all-around game was on display, with timely mid-range jumpers during Abra's early run and strong work on the defensive glass.

Jake Figueroa (Abra) — 13 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists. Figueroa's energy on both ends was a difference-maker, particularly in transition where he pushed the pace after defensive stops.

Raven Gonzales (Abra) — 5 points, 9 rebounds, 3 blocks. Gonzales' interior presence changed Quezon City's shot selection and protected the rim throughout, as reflected in three blocked shots.

The 79–51 final scoreline speaks to Abra's defensive dominance. Holding an opponent to 51 points in a 28-point rout tells a story of systematic pressure at all three levels — perimeter containment, paint protection and transition defence working in concert. Abra's 19th consecutive win (and 21st of the season) has been built on this defensive foundation; the offence, led by Ildefonso and Fenner, has been good enough to capitalise.

Abra improved to a North Division-best 21–1 (wins since before August 1), extending their lead atop the standings over Batang Kankaloo (19–3) and San Juan Knights (16–2). The Weavers are the clear favourites to repeat as MPBL champions, riding the longest active winning streak in the league.

Quezon City dropped to 10–11, sitting on the fringe of the play-in picture in a crowded middle of the North Division. The Black Bulls have struggled for consistency, alternating wins and losses over their last ten games.

Next fixtures: Abra Weavers face Valenzuela City on August 29, followed by a marquee North Division clash against Batang Kankaloo on September 12. Quezon City next face Gensan on August 28, then San Juan Knights on August 31.

Abra continue to look every bit the defending champions. Ildefonso's seamless return from Jones Cup duty adds another layer to a team already stacked with depth, defensive discipline and championship experience. Quezon City offered little resistance — the 28-point margin was a fair reflection of the gap between a title contender and a mid-table side struggling for play-in survival.
