Halifax Mooseheads vs Charlottetown Islanders

Halifax seized control before the game was 10 minutes old. Evan Nee opened the scoring at 6:38 of the first period (assisted by W. Hughes), and Colby MacLeod doubled the lead just 1:28 later at 8:06, finishing a feed from J. Cameron and P. McNab. The Mooseheads carried that 2-0 lead into the intermission.

The second period began with more of the same. S. Fishbone made it 3-0 just 1:13 in, scoring unassisted to push the margin to three. Charlottetown replied at 5:13 when T. Farren beat Fichthorn with help from T. Lebrun and R. Jewer, cutting the deficit to 3-1. But any hope of a sustained comeback lasted all of nine minutes: Jamie Calla restored the three-goal cushion at 14:53 of the middle frame, with MacLeod earning his second assist of the night.

P. Sintschnig capped the scoring 12:25 into the third period, burying a setup from B. Smith and W. Hughes (his second assist) to make it 5-1.

The game was effectively decided in a 2:08 stretch of the first period. Nee's opening goal at 6:38 — a clean finish from the slot — was followed almost immediately by MacLeod's deflection at 8:06. Starting the game down two goals on the road inside the first 10 minutes forced Charlottetown to chase the game, and the Isles never managed to get within a single goal. The early burst gave Fichthorn a cushion he never needed but certainly appreciated.

Evan Nee opened his pre-season account in style, scoring the game's first goal and showing why he entered the year rated a 3.75-star prospect and the No. 7-ranked player in US Central Scouting by Neutral Zone. His calm finish set the tone.

Jack Fichthorn was the story in net. The Mooseheads goaltender stopped 35 of 36 shots faced, allowing only Farren's second-period strike. The Mooseheads' official social media called it a "great outing," and the defensive corps in front of him limited Charlottetown to mostly low-danger chances despite the volume.

Jamie Calla (3.75-star, No. 18 per Neutral Zone) added an insurance goal in the second period and showcased the two-way game that makes him one of Halifax's most intriguing young forwards.

Colby MacLeod had a goal and an assist, factoring in two of the first four goals.

Despite the lop-sided scoreline, shots on goal were nearly even — Halifax 37, Charlottetown 36. That tells the real story of the night: Fichthorn was the difference. The Mooseheads converted five of 37 shots (13.5%), while the Islanders managed just one goal on 36 attempts (2.8%). Halifax's two-goal first-period outburst (two goals on approximately 11 shots in the opening frame) put the game on ice before the Islanders could establish their own rhythm. The special teams battle was not a factor — neither team scored on the power play in a clean game with no penalties recorded.

Halifax improved to 2-1-0-0 in pre-season play, building momentum after a difficult 2025-26 regular season in which the Mooseheads went 29-29-3-3 (64 points), finishing 8th in the Eastern Conference. The balanced scoring — five different goal-scorers, none of them repeat names — is an early sign of the offensive depth the coaching staff has been seeking.

Charlottetown dropped to 1-2-0-0 in pre-season. The Islanders finished the 2025-26 regular season at 33-23-2-6 (74 points), good for 4th in the East, and will look to tighten up defensively ahead of opening night. Despite the defeat, they held their own territorially — the shot count suggests this was a closer game than the scoreboard indicates.

The rivalry, with Halifax leading 26-24 in 50 all-time meetings, remains as competitive as ever.

This was a textbook pre-season performance from Halifax: fast start, goaltending dominance, and scoring from all four lines. Fichthorn's 35-save showing was the headline, but the spread of goal-scorers — Nee, MacLeod, Fishbone, Calla and Sintschnig — offers genuine encouragement for a Mooseheads side that struggled for consistency a year ago. For Charlottetown, the process was better than the result; the Isles created chances in volume but simply ran into a hot goaltender on the night.
