North Dakota State vs Jacksonville State

NDSU wasted no time settling into its new division. Nathan Hayes (14/22, 160 yards, 2 TD, INT) engineered an eight-play, 75-yard opening drive capped by a 6-yard touchdown pass to Reis Kessel at the 10:09 mark of the first quarter.

Jacksonville State answered. Quarterback Caden Creel (12/23, 85 yards, INT; 44 rushing yards) scrambled for an 8-yard touchdown run with 4:16 left in the opening period, and Garrison Rippa's extra point levelled the score at 7–7.

The Bison defence took over from there. Drew Klein hit a 34-yard field goal after a 14-play, 8:23 drive early in the second quarter to put NDSU ahead 10–7. With 18 seconds left before halftime, Hayes connected with Jordan McCants on a 44-yard strike downfield, and Klein's extra point made it 17–7 at the break.

NDSU pulled away in the third quarter. Klein added a 44-yard field goal at the 6:59 mark. Two plays later, the Bison defence forced a fumble on a botched Jacksonville State snap, and Blake Schiltz recovered the ball in the end zone for a touchdown — the sequence took just 18 seconds of game clock and stretched the lead to 27–7.

Klein capped the scoring with fourth-quarter field goals from 42 and 48 yards, finishing a perfect 4-for-4 on the day.

The 18-second sequence in the third quarter that turned a 20–7 game into 27–7. After Klein's 44-yard field goal, Jacksonville State took over at its own 25. On the second play of the drive, a miscommunication on a shotgun snap resulted in a fumble that Schiltz fell on in the end zone. The two-score swing effectively ended any hope of a Gamecocks comeback.

Nathan Hayes, QB, North Dakota State — Efficient and composed in his FBS debut. Hayes avoided the big mistake (save one first-half interception) and delivered the dagger on the 44-yard touchdown to McCants just before halftime. His passer efficiency rating of 145.0 reflected a clean night.

Drew Klein, K, North Dakota State — Four field goals from 34, 44, 42 and 48 yards without a miss, plus three extra points. Klein accounted for 15 of NDSU's 33 points — nearly half the total.

Blake Schiltz, DL, North Dakota State — Changed the game without touching the ball on offence. His fumble recovery touchdown midway through the third quarter broke Jacksonville State's resistance.

Caden Creel, QB, Jacksonville State — The lone bright spot for the Gamecocks. Creel accounted for 129 of Jax State's 170 total yards (85 passing, 44 rushing) and scored their only touchdown on an 8-yard keep. But he was under constant pressure and hit on just 12 of 23 attempts.

Player of the Match: Nathan Hayes — The Bison quarterback threw for two scores and managed the game through a dominant rushing attack that churned out 209 yards on the ground.

NDSU's 5.6 yards per play to Jax State's 3.1 tells the story of a game controlled at the line of scrimmage. The Bison held the ball for 36:07 — more than 12 minutes longer than the Gamecocks — and converted 5 of 14 third downs to Jax State's 2 of 10. The -8 penalty margin (13 for 94 yards) was the only statistical blemish on NDSU's sheet, and Jacksonville State could not capitalise.

The Bison's 209 rushing yards on 45 carries (4.6 ypc) softened the secondary for Hayes' downfield throws, notably the 44-yarder to McCants that required single coverage on a play-action rollout. Jax State, by contrast, averaged just 2.6 yards per carry against a Bison front that had no trouble matching the step up in competition.

North Dakota State (1–0) opened its FBS era in emphatic fashion. The Bison, who spent 22 seasons in the FCS and won 10 national titles in that span, showed no signs of a reclassification adjustment period. They host Fordham next Saturday (5 September).

Jacksonville State (0–1) drops its season opener for the second time in three years since moving to the FBS and Conference USA. The Gamecocks travel to Eastern Kentucky next Saturday. At 170 total yards and 2-of-10 on third down, the offensive line and play-calling will need rapid improvement in Week 2.

North Dakota State's FBS arrival was as emphatic as advertised. The Bison imposed their will at the line of scrimmage, controlled the clock, and got mistake-free quarterback play. Jacksonville State, outmatched physically on both sides, could never recover from the third-quarter fumble. The gap between the two programmes on this afternoon was 26 points, and honest film study won't dispute it.
