Roosevelt opened with a 16-play, 69-yard drive that consumed over seven minutes, capped by a 24-yard Sean Sample field goal for a 3–0 lead. Chicago State responded swiftly: after a Roosevelt three-and-out forced by the Cougars’ defense, Michael Dabney Jr. punched in a 5-yard touchdown run to put CSU ahead 7–3 — the first points in program history.

The second quarter belonged entirely to Roosevelt. Chahino found Jaden Bossie for a 19-yard touchdown over the middle on the 11th play of a 75-yard drive to reclaim the lead for good. Two plays after a defensive stop on fourth down, Chahino rolled right and hit Dylan Hendee wide open at the pylon for a 5-yard score. Before the crowd had settled, Keron Pryor intercepted a deflected pass and raced 28 yards for a pick-six, making it 24–7.

Chicago State answered with an 8-play, 72-yard drive capped by Ashton Pannell’s 27-yard touchdown pass to Kymari Gray, cutting the deficit to 24–14. But Roosevelt’s punt-block team forced a fumbled snap from the CSU punter, setting up Sample’s 22-yard field goal as time expired in the half — a 27–14 Roosevelt lead at the break.

Roosevelt extended the advantage early in the third quarter. Bossie broke off a 54-yard touchdown run up the left sideline, and Sample added a 23-yard field goal after a fumble recovery by Derek Whaley. Chicago State’s Mark Harris caught a 14-yard touchdown from Pannell late in the quarter to make it 37–21.

Whaley intercepted a pass early in the fourth quarter, setting up Chahino’s 27-yard rainbow to CJ Hood for a 44–21 lead. Chicago State added a late 7-yard touchdown from Pannell to Arshawn Powell, but the outcome had long been settled.

His 54-yard third-quarter run was the longest play of the day.

Tony Chahino (QB, Roosevelt) completed 20 passes for 236 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions, orchestrating an offense that scored on all five red-zone trips.

Stacey Terry (DB, Roosevelt) led all defenders with 12 tackles and added one tackle for loss.

Ashton Pannell (QB, Chicago State) threw for 264 yards and three touchdowns, showing poise in the Cougars’ first-ever game. He connected with three different receivers for scores.

Chicago State (7–7–7–7) was remarkably consistent across quarters but never generated a stop when it mattered most. Total yards were nearly identical — Roosevelt 389, Chicago State 387 — but Roosevelt’s three turnovers forced (two interceptions, one fumble) against one giveaway of its own created a +2 margin that directly produced 14 points (the Pryor pick-six and the field goal after Whaley’s fumble return).

Roosevelt’s 153 rushing yards — led by Bossie’s 142 — contrasted with Chicago State’s 123 on the ground, and the Lakers converted both of their fourth-down attempts while holding CSU to 2-of-5. For Chicago State (0–1), the scoreline reflects the growing pains expected of a brand-new FCS program in its first competitive outing. The Cougars showed offensive capability — 387 total yards, three passing touchdowns — but three turnovers and costly penalties (9 for 50 yards) proved fatal. They face UT Martin on the road on 5 September.

Roosevelt’s second-quarter barrage decided a game that was otherwise statistically balanced. The Lakers’ experience (13 returning starters) and established systems overwhelmed a Chicago State program still finding its footing. The Cougars’ consistency across all four quarters suggests they have building blocks, but the gulf in game-day execution — especially in turnover margin — was the difference between a competitive debut and a 16-point defeat.
